As an allergist I know that Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is really a disease, and is not in the mind of a person. I once had two or three patients that suffer for sensitivity to multiple antibiotics.
As for asthma it is also a very real disease ,that if left untreated, it could kill you.

Hi Joe,

glad you liked the article, and thanks for the link. I think Gulf War syndrome is closely related to MCS, if not in fact the same thing, which is why I didn’t mention it explicitly. Rather, I was trying to show that the medical establishment has a history of treating things it doesn’t (yet) understand as being psychological, and can be painfully slow to abandon that position. It’s wrong to stigmatise people because of the lack of understanding or knowledge of others, even when they are ‘experts’.

You forgot Gulf War illness in your list of ilnesses previously thought by some to be psychological, but now recognised by federal government as being caused by chemicals.
