Il y a qelque jours j’ai laisse un commentaire sur «The Marvellous in Nature» disant que nous n’avions pas encore assez de neige pour sortir les racquets. Eh bien, ca a change! On en a eu plusiers centimetres ces derniers jours.
La photo ci-dessus a ete prise le vendredi matin. L’etang en bas a droite aussi. Assez de neige la, on voit bien. Plus tard dans la journee il neigait encore, comme on voit a gauche, pris depuis notre salon ou on reste a chaud.

Meme avant que la neige venait, il a fait froid ici, donc evidemment il y a moins d’insectes dehors. Neanmoins, il rest quelques surprises. Il y a quelques jours j’ai regarde a travers la fenetre et j’ai vu ce lion des pucerons colle sur l’exterieur. Si je comprends bien, il devrait etre en hibernation actuellement. Peut-etre il a entendu parler de mon l’hotel pour insectes que j’ai construit le mois dernier, et il voulait y prendre une chambre?
Il n’est pas le soul lion des pucerons qu’on a vu dernierment, il y en a un qui a decide de vivre avec nous pour l’hiver. Il passe le temps dans la chambre d’amis, qui n’est pas chauffee parce-que nous y mettons mes cactus pour l’hiver.

Nous l’avons nomme Edgar. Edgar a passe les derniers 2 ou 3 jours a l’appui de fenetre, qui n’est pas un endroit particulierement sur, donc ce matin je lui ai construt un petit boit rempli de papier dechire. Je n’ai aucune idee s’il trouve le quoi manger, ou s’il en a besoin en hiver, il ne bouge pas beacoup du tout. Si vous avez des conseils comment le soigner pendant l’hiver, j’aimerais bien le savoir!
Puis, il y a les oiseaux. On en a plusiers qui s’abritent sous le toit, et ils sont content de se servir de la nourriture qu’on les don. On a meme ete visite par des pies, mais pas pour longtemps, ils se mefient de nous et s’envolent des qu’ils voient le moindre mouvement dedans. J’espere qu’ils apprendrent a nous faire confiance et qu’ils resteront plus longtemps, ils sont si beaux.
Les oiseaux ne s’interessent pas a l’eau que je mets pour eux, ce que je trouve pas tres reconnaissant, vu l’effort qu’il faut pour remplacer l’eau chaque fois qu’il gele. Bon, je presume qu’ils savent se qu’il les faut. On va continuer a les donner a manger autant qu’ils viennent!

Just a few days ago, I commented over at The Marvellous in Nature that we didn’t have enough snow yet for snow-shoeing. Well that has all changed! We now have several centimetres, or quite a few inches, depending on which you prefer.
The photo above was from our morning walk last Friday. The stream below on the right was taken then too. Plenty of snow there, as you can see. Later in the day we had more snow, the picture on the left being taken from the warmth and comfort of our living room.

Even before the snow came, it’s been very cold here, so obviously there are far less insects about now, but there are still a few surprises here and there. Some days ago I looked up from my laptop to see this lacewing on the outside of the window. As far as I know, they should all be hibernating now. Maybe he had heard about the bug-hotel I made last month and was going to check out the accomodation?
He’s not the only lacewing we’ve seen lately, one has decided to move in with us for the winter. He now spends his time in the spare room, which we keep unheated for my cacti.

We’ve named him Edgar, the fly who came in from the cold. Edgar has spent the last 2 or 3 days on the window-sill, which is not a particularly safe place for him to be, so I’ve moved him into a small box of shredded paper. I have no idea if he manages to find food, or if he needs any now, he doesn’t move far at all it seems. If anyone has suggestions on how to look after him and help him survive the winter, please let me know!
Then of course there’s our feathered friends. We have many birds sheltering in the eaves, and they are quite happy to avail themselves of the food we put out for them. We’ve been investigated by magpies a few times too, but they seem too shy to stay when they see us through the window. Hopefully they’ll learn to trust us and stay a little longer, they’re so beautiful.
The birds don’t seem to bother with the water much, which I think is pretty ungrateful of them considering the effort it takes to replace it every time it freezes. Still, I guess they know what they need. As long as they keep coming for the food, we will keep putting it out for them!
